Frequently Asked Questions

1. What style do you teach?

Our style is called Tang Soo Do and is from Korea. It shares many traits with traditional Okinawan and Japanese Karate as well as Tae Kwon Do. We have also incorporated techniques from other martial arts such as Judo and Hapkido. You can read a short history of Tang Soo Do on our “About the Art” page.

2. Is your style better than _________________?

The answer to that question depends on the student and his or her goals. We continue to find that Tang Soo Do fulfills the needs of the vast majority (but not all) of the people we encounter. In the end, the question of “style” is not as important as the question “Am I a better person and working closer to my goals”.

3. To what degree is Eastern philosophy incorporated in class?

Eastern philosophy is only talked about within the context of physical technique and etiquette. In no way is the study or adherence to Eastern religion introduced or required in our classes.

4. How long does it take to get a black belt?

The minimum time to black belt in our school is approximately 3 years. This estimate is based upon the quality of our curriculum and presumes a student who trains to pass every test along the way. Other schools have different standards based on their requirements.

5. How are your instructors certified?

Our instructors are certified through the Atlantic-Pacific Tang Soo Do Federation. Instructor trainees are required to attend an extensive academic course with textbook material and practical exercises. Before they are certified, they must pass a one and half hour written exam and pass a board review of their character and teaching capabilities. The entire process takes one to two years depending on the trainee and all but guarantees the highest-quality instructors available.

6. Won’t karate make my child aggressive?

Absolutely not! As a matter of fact, you will find that your child has more control and patience after taking classes with us!

7. Don’t you have to be young and in shape for martial arts?

Not at all! Martial arts are one of the few activities in which you compete with only yourself. So no matter what age or shape you are in when you start, as long as you keep trying, you will see real progress.

8. Am I going to get injured?

Not if we can help it! We have professionally trained staff, a structured curriculum and padded equipment to make sure that your training is challenging without damaging. We practice “hard” training; not “hurt” training.
